Getting Started With Your First Dance Pole

Learning how to choose a dance pole is the most important decision you will make.

Most people have a budget in mind when shopping for a dance pole. Dance poles for sale range anywhere from $60 to over $1000 depending on whether they are static, spinning, portable, brand name, or if they have a platform ( also known as a podium or stage base).

Static Dance Poles For Beginners

Static poles don’t turn or rotate while you are dancing and are the cheapest.   Most people say this is the best piece of equipment to buy for beginners but I feel it’s a mistake unless you know you love static only pole dancing.   Keep reading, I will explain.

 

Spinning Dance Poles For Beginners

Spinning poles can be spinning or static and are better when beginning to learn how to pole dance.  Eventually you will want to enjoy a spinning dance pole and my students say they are easier to dance one.   If feel it’s worth the extra money to get a spinning dance pole for the long run.

Portable and Removable Dance Poles For Beginners

Portable or removable poles are convenient for the average homeowner or traveling dancer.   Removable dance pole are the most common used dance pole for home use for obvious reasons – you can change rooms easy, take it with when you  are done renting, or take it down when company comes over if needed for example.

Best Brand Name Dance Poles To Start With

Brand names can help you determine the quality of a pole; however, through a little education on what to look for in a sturdy pole, then you can easily find a good quality off brand name dance pole.  Not all brand name dance poles are considered SAFE.   Please watch the video below to understand why and learn what to look for in a safe, good quality dance pole.

Freestanding Dance Poles For Beginners

Free standing or stand along dance poles with a platform at the base are great when you can’t connect the pole to a ceiling.   They are a lot more expensive, but fun and worth the money if you can spare it.

The Best and Most Commonly Used Dance Poles For Beginners

The most commonly used dance pole for home is a chrome 45mm dance pole. There are two types of poles that are good for home use and those are removable dance poles and a permanently installed dance pole.

If you don’t have a place in your home for a permanent install or live in an apartment, a removable pole is best. The other reason I feel that a removable pole is the best piece of pole fitness equipment is that you can change your mind about its location and it’s easier to install. This is perfect for your average household user.

Removable poles come in both static and spinning form. As a pole fitness instructor, I know from experience that beginners always prefer a spinning pole. They are easier to use. On the other hand, a static pole will help develop your strength and grip faster since you have to use more force to create momentum which also gives you get a better workout.

There are dangers when buying pole fitness equipment. You must learn about how to choose a dance pole that is sturdy and safe.

Not all poles are safe to dance on. Some don’t stay connected to the ceiling well, some have chips of chrome peeling off, some have poor quality steel, some have bad bearings, and so on.  Here is a great video about that topic:

Pole Dance Crash Mats

Pole dance crash mats are the only other piece of equipment you could consider buying other than a dance pole to get started pole dancing for fitness at home.

Crash mats are not necessarily required but can play a key role in safety, especially if you can do intermediate or advanced pole dance moves.   Beginners often stay ground and dance around the pole and avoid inverting so if that sound like you, you could hold off buying your first crash mat until you know you need it.   Use your own discretion.

Last Pieces of The Puzzle To Get Started

Other pole items needed to begin pole fitness dancing include proper pole dance fitness clothing and shoes (If any), as well as a fun pole dance fitness routine.

Once you have all the pole fitness equipment pieces and learned how to choose a good dance pole, then you are ready to learn how to pole dance at home.

      Hi, I am a male, age 57, relatively good shape, would like to shed some waistline inches, I am stocky-muscular build.
      So, following your video on buying a Static Pole for more intense exercise & workouts, I am now trying to figure out the type of routine to start with. You have everything for woman and I am okay with learning to walk around the pole, and grip, etc… But I am certainly not a dancer, Lol, and not trying to erotacize my workout.
      Do you have any suggestions for a beginner workout to make me sweat, burn calories and intensify my muscles? or have I made a bad choice in pole?

        Hi Carl! Great question and I am very proud of you by the way : ) At 57 you are prepared to take a fun risk and rock it with pole dancing as your workout!! Pats on the back for YOU!!!!! You are inspiring to me!

        There are several beginner pole dance routines that make great workouts on the website that may work for you. The Play and Win pole dance routine for beginners is the most commonly used FREE pole dancing lessons series. Im not sure if it will be too intense or intense enough for you because I don’t know your fitness level.

        My BEST recommendation is the get the PoleBody Complete Home Course because it has MANY pole dancing routine like ultra basic, beginners, intermediates and advanced levels to choose from along with warm-ups, stretches, and individual pole move breakdowns. EVERYTHING you need to sweat and burn calories at any fitness level for the average everyday woman : )

        No you didn’t buy a bad pole by choosing static 🙂 A Spinning dance pole is a better choice because you can always keep it in static until your are ready to put it in spinning mode. The spinning mode is the most fun for everyone because it makes your pole moves more effortless (easier for many beginners) and gives your that “kid on a marry-go-round” happy giddy feeling while you workout.
